Had a great spring skiing day at Jay Peak today. The snow was soft and plentiful, and the weather turned out to be much better than predicted! We enjoyed a mix of sun, snowflakes and clouds. We skied in the glades as much as possible and we weren't disappointed. There was plenty of snow and bumps, and much fewer people to avoid than on the trails. More than a foot of snow reported at top of Mt. Mansfield, Jay and Killington! It's been snowing up high for over a day. Some Vermont ski resorts are reporting 1 to 3 inches of new snow fell overnight on the upper portions of their mountains. Ski resorts in the northern and central parts of Vermont picked up another round of unexpectedly high snowfall yesterday. Depending on location, it was on the order of 6 to 12 inches of snow! Mother Nature helped fuel the excitement for a snowy start to the 2011 - 2012 ski season, and five Vermont ski resorts ran lifts this Thanksgiving weekend. The snowstorm that is currently hitting Vermont has been most ferocious in the northern part of the Green Mountains. (It's about time! Several of the storms this season favored southern Vermont!) I'm going skiing in the morning! Yippee! The boards are waxed and my boot bag is packed. I'm interested to see how the new Green Ski Wax I just used will hold up for me. It smelled different when I put it on -- but the great thing is that it doesn't have PFCs or petroleum. Are you ready for this? The National Weather Service reports that the higher peaks in Vermont may receive a few inches of snow, which may start falling on Friday! Last week we were in the midst of a freak spring snowstorm, while the last few days have been warm — almost too warm as we hit around 80 degrees. Things are looking very green in northern Vermont. Here's a peek at what things looked like at higher elevations today in northern Vermont. I messed around on the Bryant and World Cup trails on Bolton Valley's nordic system this afternoon. Yesterday's freak spring storm and today's bright sunshine made this a must-do exercise. I'd say there was at least 14 inches in these shaded trails, which are located at about 2,100 feet. Updated afternoon of 4/26/10 Well it's clear that Killington has stopped running its lifts: they switched over to their summer homepage today. This morning I had the opportunity to enjoy a sunny ski morning at Jay Peak Resort. When I got out of my car, the wind whipped through the parking lot and I decided it would be prudent to throw on an extra layer. As if trying to make up for the tropical weather we experienced in November, Old Man Winter is really putting the chill on this week.
