A few inches of fresh snow, and three more ski resorts are slated to open

Snowy view of Okemo ski resort, Vermont

One to seven inches of snow fell around the state on Wednesday night to help make things look a bit more wintry in Vermont. Today and tonight some areas will see snow showers.

Dipping temperatures have helped with plans for three more ski resorts to spin their lifts for the first time this weekend. Bolton Valley Resort plans to open Saturday, as does Mount Snow. Bromley Mountain plans to open on Sunday.

Mount Snow will celebrate the "first flight" of the Bluebird Express, its...[Read more]

Snow may be on its way in time for more Vermont ski resorts to open for Thanksgiving weekend

I flew in over a frosty-topped Camel's Hump yesterday afternoon after a trip out of town. I soon heard that the forecast calls for a winter storm tonight into Wednesday! Could be a few to several inches of snow accumulation, or a mix of rain and snow depending where you are in Vermont. [See forecast.]

The new colder temperatures and potential snowfall may help those Vermont ski resorts that want to open this Thanksgiving week and weekend.

Stowe has confirmed that they will...[Read more]

For the 2011 - 2012 ski season, new ski lifts are being installed at three ski resorts in Vermont. New lifts are coming online at Stowe and Burke Mountain up north, and Mount Snow in the south.

Here's the scoop on these resort improvement projects:

When do Vermont ski resorts plan to open for 2011 - 2012?

Riding last year at Bolton Valley

With that crazy October snowstorm, Mother Nature allowed Killington to get a jump-start to the ski season. The resort continues to offer skiing daily as weather and conditions allow.

Meanwhile, other Vermont ski resorts are pulling out their snowmaking guns and fans and preparing the lifts and base lodges for skiers and riders later in November and December.

Ski Vermont recently reported these tentative opening dates:

The 2011 - 2012 ski season begins in Vermont

Yes, we haven't yet hit November — the time when several Vermont ski resorts target their opening dates — but we've got lifts spinning just the same! Mount Snow opened a small jib park with lift service for the weekend, while Killington opened a couple of trails serviced by riding the K-1 Gondola to the Northridge Triple.

The October 29 storm that made a snowy mess in the northeast last night dumped some snow on southern and central Vermont mountains. Not nearly...[Read more]

Farmers’ markets in Vermont — veggies (and more) in the mountains!

After a snowy winter and wet spring, we are enjoying farmers’ market season in Vermont! At recent markets that I went to I saw lots of leafy vegetables, tomatoes, beans, peas, beets and more. Can’t wait until the sweet corn is out, too!

The Skimeister and I started our garden a bit late due to an extremely wet May and some early-June travel. But with some recent heat and sun, things are really starting to grow (eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, for example). But I’ve been picking up...[Read more]

A variety of yummy skiing news this week

Oh, you lucky, lucky Mount Snow skiers!

You get to fuel up on my favorite coffee any day of the week — slopeside!

Mount Snow and Vermont Coffee Company announced they have opened a café at the ski resort. Vermont Coffee is roasted in Middlebury, Vermont, and the Skimaven ski blog is basically powered by their yummy Dark Roast.

Not only does the coffee taste delicious, but it's fair trade and organic. I know — almost too good to be true!

Other tasty news this week is that Mad River Glen is...[Read more]

It must be spring: here come the pond skimmers

To skim, or not to skim. That is the question.

Well if you're game, you have a good selection of pond skimming contests at Vermont ski resorts to choose from. Here are a few to consider watching, or participating in, below.

The alpine ski areas are still enjoying spring skiing, while the nordic centers are winding down, and some up north are closed already.

Mount Snow opens with a mini-park in beginner area for skiers and riders

Mount Snow is open this weekend with some rails and boxes in its Launch Pad beginner area. The mini-park is served by the novice triple chair.

Even with very limited terrain, about 400 skiers and riders came out on Saturday to start their season of sliding on the snow.

Unseasonably cold temperatures this month have allowed Vermont ski resorts to take the snowmaking guns and fans out of storage and make snow.

Mount Snow is not expected to remain open during the week. We'll see if they open...[Read more]

Vermont ski resorts test energy efficiency of snowmaking systems

Efficient snowmaking fan guns

Have I told you how much I love Efficiency Vermont? I personally have benefited from their energy efficiency programs and rebates (yes, rebates!). Now Vermont ski resorts can get into the act by testing the efficiency of their snowmaking systems.

Efficiency Vermont offers free testing so resort managers can see which snowmaking technologies are the biggest energy hogs. Then, hopefully, they will upgrade to systems that use less energy and still churn out the snow.

George Lawrence of...[Read more]

Heading for the final stretch

Believe it or not, many Vermont resorts picked up a few inches of snow early this week. I skied in it a bit late Thursday afternoon in the Bolton Valley backcountry trails.

With the warm temperatures and sunshine we have been having it was like skiing through sticky mashed potatoes. But there continues to be a lot of snow in the woods at this higher elevation and we had fun making the most of it. Although, we had to cross a stream to finish our descent on Gardner's Lane. There's a lot of...[Read more]

Guidebook author's advice for Vermont ski vacations: Branch out away from mega resorts

What's the most common mistake out-of-state visitors make when planning ski trips to Vermont?

This is the question that Budget Travel magazine put to a Vermont guidebook author this month, and I have to say he had a decent answer.

"The biggest mistake people make is the head right to the 'biggest' mountains with the biggest names—especially Killington, Sugarbush, and Mount Snow. While those mountains have earned their reputation for some of the most exciting and difficult terrain in the...[Read more]

'Twas the day before Thanksgiving, and all through the house, people were looking for their winter gear, and starting to grouse.

OK, I've found my boot bag, long johns, hats and mittens, helmet, and even my balaklava. But where the heck is my ski jacket and ski pants? I'm going to need these things pronto!
