Had a great spring skiing day at Jay Peak today. The snow was soft and plentiful, and the weather turned out to be much better than predicted! We enjoyed a mix of sun, snowflakes and clouds.
We skied in the glades as much as possible and we weren't disappointed. There was plenty of snow and bumps, and much fewer people to avoid than on the trails. Jay has a broad selection of tree runs — from Timbuktu off the Jet Triple Chair all the way to Beaver...[Read more]

November had brought some steady cold temperatures, until Monday hit with record highs! Luckily, that didn't last long and ski resorts are back at making snow and picking up some natural snow at higher elevations.
Two more Vermont ski resorts are poised to open on Saturday: Stowe Mountain Resort and Sugarbush Resort. This is in addition to Killington and Okemo, which are already spinning their lifts.

When are Vermont ski resorts opening? Ski Vermont has released a list of the tentative opening dates for Vermont ski resorts. Remember that during early season there are often a select few trails open to start; check to see which trails and what ability level they are.
These may change due to weather, of course, but here's what the ski resorts are thinking:

It’s mid-August and the summer in Vermont has been mighty fine, but many a skier and rider are already thinking about where they will ski this winter. Season passes are just one of the ways you can save some dough on the Vermont slopes. But, you have to estimate how many days you will ski at a resort to see if the math works out to your advantage.
Frequent skier cards, Vermonter lift ticket discounts, and a variety of special event ticket deals are also options, and we...[Read more]

It’s veggie time in the mountains of Vermont! Vermont's ski towns are among those that have weekly farmers' markets when the snow is not flying.
The Vermont Agency of Agriculture produces a handy website that has a statewide schedule of many farmers’ markets. The list includes these markets which I selected because they are located somewhere near a Vermont ski resort or ski town that you may be visiting during the summer months:

Vermont has experienced summer-like temperatures over the last week. We've been wearing shorts and t-shirts. The sun has shone brightly as well, and while this makes for lovely weather to recreate in, it hasn't been kind to the snow.
Some ski resorts have thrown in the towel for the season, while some others will call it quits this weekend. Some mention that bare spots can be encountered any time and walking may be required at the top and bottom of trails.
Others mention that...[Read more]

One to seven inches of snow fell around the state on Wednesday night to help make things look a bit more wintry in Vermont. Today and tonight some areas will see snow showers.
Dipping temperatures have helped with plans for three more ski resorts to spin their lifts for the first time this weekend. Bolton Valley Resort plans to open Saturday, as does Mount Snow. Bromley Mountain plans to open on Sunday.

This time of year can really try a skier's patience. Temperatures rise and fall. Rain can sneek in, rather than snow. And sometimes we can get a blizzard. You just never know.
As we turned our calendars to December this week, some colder temperatures returned to the region — thankfully — after a warm spell. Snowmaking guns and fans could be heard at several of Vermont's ski resorts. Small armies of snowmakers were painting the ski trails white.
This weekend Stowe, Okemo and...[Read more]

This Thanksgiving we're thankful for some fresh snow falling in Vermont! Some higher elevations and ski areas are reporting 6 to 10 inches of new snow so far this morning. The amount depends on location. A wide central swath of the state seems to have picked up a good snowfall.
This morning a few more ski resorts announced their plans to open. So here's a recap of where you can ski in Vermont (these have been announced as of 9 a.m. this morning).

After a snowy winter and wet spring, we are enjoying farmers’ market season in Vermont! At recent markets that I went to I saw lots of leafy vegetables, tomatoes, beans, peas, beets and more. Can’t wait until the sweet corn is out, too!

Looks like most Vermont ski resorts picked up about 2 - 6 inches of new snow on the first day of spring. That should help things a bit after a warm, sunny weekend.
Okemo, Killington and Bolton Valley ski areas all report about 4 - 5 inches. And temps will stay cool this week so we'll likely see a few more flakes.
On another note, we heard some news from Stowe Mountain Resort this week. They’ll be replacing the FourRunner Quad with a new, modern detachable quad. The FourRunner was installed in...[Read more]

As if trying to make up for the tropical weather we experienced in November, Old Man Winter is really putting the chill on this week. It will be cold again tomorrow but I'm hoping to get out in the snow for a bit. I'll do some kind of nordic to keep the blood flowing; probably backcountry skiing.

Your first chairlift ride as a beginner can be frightening. I remember as a ski instructor that adults tend to need a little coaxing to feel confident that they can survive it, while novice kids look at it longingly and ask when they can ride it.
Really it's all in the timing and coordination. We've all seen it—a bunch of unseasoned skiers stepping all over one another's skis as they negotiate a turn in the lift line four abreast and then try to sprint to catch the next chair. Or, god forbid,...[Read more]
