Congratulations to the ski racers at the 2013 NCAA Skiing Championships! The races were contested on the slopes of Middlebury Snow Bowl and trails of Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton, Vt. While things were looking very good for UVM to take another title this year, they finished on the podium in third place. U Colorado and U Utah beat them out on the last day. Sigh. The SkiMeister and I watched the last day of racing on Saturday. We saw the men's Nordic 20K freestyle and the...[Read more]

Spring-like cross-country skiing at Rikert Nordic Center today

Spring was in the air and in the snow today as we visited Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton, Vermont. It was Winter Trails Day and Rikert (pronounced rye-curt) was offering free skiing, rentals and a group lesson. Can't beat that deal! The Skimeister was helping with the Northeast Disabled Athletic Association's free sit-ski clinic. I took a tour that would bring me in a clockwise triangle of sorts through the Nordic network, which is based at Middlebury's Bread Loaf...[Read more]

Thank goodness for good grooming at ski centers such as Rikert!

But with a bit of rain that fell recently, a crust had developed in many places so I wanted to find a scenic cross-country ski center with very good grooming. Rikert Ski Touring Center in Ripton, Vt., filled the bill. Located at Middlebury College's Bread Loaf campus, Rikert has a lovely network...[Read more]

Great grooming & some surprises at Rikert cross-country center

The kids that go to Middlebury College have it good. They can ski at the Middlebury Snow Bowl and the Rikert Ski touring Center; both are owned and operated by the college. To get to Rikert from Middlebury, we drove Route 125 up and along the Middlebury River, through the micro-village of Ripton, and then to the college's scenic Bread Loaf Campus. Rikert nordic center is based in one of the barns on this historic summer campus known for its writers' conference. The mustard-colored historic...[Read more]
