First turns of the season today!

What a nice, sunny weekend. And it featured some first-of-the-season happenings today:

Stratton opened for the season  Smugglers’ Notch opened for the season  I got my first turns of the season today!

While it was a windy day, and lift holds were apparently an issue at Sugarbush, I was able to get some morning runs in at Smugglers’ Notch for the first time this ski season!

Smuggs opened its Sterling Lift and and essentially one long run today. I heard some...[Read more]

Snow may be on its way in time for more Vermont ski resorts to open for Thanksgiving weekend

I flew in over a frosty-topped Camel's Hump yesterday afternoon after a trip out of town. I soon heard that the forecast calls for a winter storm tonight into Wednesday! Could be a few to several inches of snow accumulation, or a mix of rain and snow depending where you are in Vermont. [See forecast.]

The new colder temperatures and potential snowfall may help those Vermont ski resorts that want to open this Thanksgiving week and weekend.

Stowe has confirmed that they will...[Read more]

Riding last year at Bolton Valley

With that crazy October snowstorm, Mother Nature allowed Killington to get a jump-start to the ski season. The resort continues to offer skiing daily as weather and conditions allow.

Meanwhile, other Vermont ski resorts are pulling out their snowmaking guns and fans and preparing the lifts and base lodges for skiers and riders later in November and December.

Ski Vermont recently reported these tentative opening dates:

October 29: Killington...[Read more]

Stratton Mountain to host U.S. Freestyle Championships this season

Stratton ski resort in southern Vermont will host the four-day U.S. Freestyle Championships in March. This is of particular interest to Vermonters, as it will include mogul maven Hannah Kearney of Norwich, Vermont — a gold medal winner in Vancouver.

"I'm pleased to share my home state for a great finale to the ski season," said Kearney in a US Ski Team press release. "I'm looking forward to Stratton hosting the Sprint U.S. Freestyle Championships. It's nice to bring the event back to New...[Read more]

Mountain improvements at southern Vermont ski resorts Bromley, Magic and Stratton

Snowmaking improvements on tap at Magic Mountain.

This season it was challenging to get information on Vermont ski resort mountain improvements. You see, I like to write about the on-mountain, skiing-related improvements because those apply to all skiers and riders, whether or not you are dining at or staying overnight at a resort or not. While this year there are some serious dollars being spent here and there on slopeside lodging, ice rinks, mountain coasters and art centers, the skiing-related improvements are fewer and farther between.Is...[Read more]

New snow over the weekend in Vermont

Mother Nature is not ready to let go of winter yet here in Vermont. On Saturday night and Sunday morning, northern and central Vermont ski resorts reported about 7 inches of new snow. For some resorts, such as Bolton Valley, this snow came in time for their final day of operation for this ski season.

Stowe, Jay Peak and Sugarbush ski resorts all reported about 7 inches in the last 48 hours. This morning Sugarbush encouraged skiers to hit the trails early today because "immature snow" (aka...[Read more]

'Twas the day before Thanksgiving

"I smell stuffing!" says this Stowe skier on Nov. 20

'Twas the day before Thanksgiving, and all through the house, people were looking for their winter gear, and starting to grouse.

OK, I've found my boot bag, long johns, hats and mittens, helmet, and even my balaklava. But where the heck is my ski jacket and ski pants? I'm going to need these things pronto!

There are at least seven ski resorts open in Vermont this weekend for early-season runs. And we've received natural snow in the mountains and even a bit down in the Banana Belt of...[Read more]
