Forecast calls for April Fools snowstorm in Vermont, April 1

So I guess it's no joke: Forecasters are still calling for a lot of snow on Friday, April 1!

A look at the National Weather Service forecast shows that they are now expecting 8 to 14 inches of snow in the mountains of Vermont. We can expect much of the snow to be rather heavy, especially in lower elevations. Hopefully it doesn't knock out power to the ski lifts!

It's ok if it knocks out power at my office :)

Check for Friday, April 1, skiing deals in Vermont at this blog post. There are...[Read more]

A variety of yummy skiing news this week

Oh, you lucky, lucky Mount Snow skiers!

You get to fuel up on my favorite coffee any day of the week — slopeside!

Mount Snow and Vermont Coffee Company announced they have opened a café at the ski resort. Vermont Coffee is roasted in Middlebury, Vermont, and the Skimaven ski blog is basically powered by their yummy Dark Roast.

Not only does the coffee taste delicious, but it's fair trade and organic. I know — almost too good to be true!

Other tasty news this week is that Mad River Glen is...[Read more]

First skinny-ski skiing of the year at Catamount

Thanks to a persistent snowstorm this past week, the Prospect, Catamount, Bolton Valley and Stowe Mountain nordic centers joined Trapp Family and Sleepy Hollow nordic skiing centers to open for cross-country skiing in Vermont.

I took my skinny skis out for the first time today. I enjoyed the trails at Catamount Outdoor Center in Williston, which is the closest nordic center to the Burlington area. Despite a shaky start -- it took a bit to get my balance at first -- I would catch a good...[Read more]

Eight resorts now open; and Catamount Trail member savings

Mother Nature has been cooperating with Vermont ski resorts by allowing for some serious snowmaking to take place recently. And, some snow squalls added a bit of natural snow to the mix today. Eight ski resorts are now open in Vermont — most with limited intermediate and expert terrain.

Gets a skier in the mood for skiing off some of their holiday overindulgence, and for saving some dough! On that note, I received my Catamount Trail Association member coupon booklet earlier this month and it's...[Read more]

Lift ticket discounts and my morning ski

Don't you hate how work gets in the way of skiing?

Well, we had to work the past couple of days — have to pay the bills — so we couldn't ski in this weekend's new snow until this morning. This was a monster storm in Burlington and the Champlain Valley, dropping about two feet of snow and breaking a record in Burlington with 33 inches! But strangely enough it was not quite as intense elsewhere.

The Skimeister and I were checking the snow reports and decided that Smugglers' Notch may have...[Read more]

Vermont season pass deals: Seize best deals on ski passes and discount programs in early fall

Vermont ski resorts offer variety of season pass deals

I’m sitting at my computer in a tank top and shorts, sipping a half-and-half (half lemonade and half iced tea). At the same time I’m fretting over the upcoming deadlines for season pass discounts and frequent skier programs at Vermont ski resorts.

This summer has zoomed by much too fast, and now we’re already planning our ski season. It’s a darn good thing that I love winter!

St. Patrick's Day ski deals and Smugglers' Notch in winter

On Sunday I went to see if there was any snow at the Smugglers' Notch cross-country center. Nope. None. Nada. The sun had melted many areas and what little was left was all ice.

For some reason the attendant at the nordic center didn't realize that there wasn't enough snow to cross-country ski on. They were renting snowshoes, which weren't really needed either; you could just walk the trails in some decent boots. The Smuggs Web site also made it seem like there was plenty of skiing there. I...[Read more]

Good skiing and bright sun at Smugglers' Notch, Vermont, today

Today was a gorgeous day to be on the slopes in Vermont. The Skimeister and I bought the Bash Badge Plus at Smugglers' Notch this season, which gives you free early- and late-season skiing (and $25 tickets in between), so we rearranged our work to hit the mountain for part of the day—sans credit card.

There is still a lot of snow up there. The snowfall from a couple of days ago still clung to the shady side of trees, and the snow was still rather soft to ski through in glades that do not get...[Read more]

Thinking about skiing Stowe this winter? Don't want to pay the full $80-something day ticket price? Then you may want to check out this promotion if you are planning on hitting Burlington, Vt., this month.

Even with the mercury rising, you can still ski in Vermont

"It's not quite over yet." So says Sugarbush ski resort, which will open up on Saturday so they can say that they skied into May. The same goes for Jay Peak resort. Both Vermont ski areas are running a lift and a couple of trails for a spring-skiing ticket price of $25.

Sugarbush will run the Super Bravo lift for skiing on the Valley House Traverse, Stein's Run and Coffee Run. They say that skiers may need to walk a bit at the end of Coffee Run to get back to the lift. They'll be serving up a...[Read more]

Starr, Nosedive, Hayride, Perry Merrill & more on Stowe's last day

Nothing like a cheap lift ticket to get people out on the slopes! Stowe Mountain Resort had a rare ticket deal yesterday: bring two cans of food for the Vermont Food Shelf and you could ski for $20. With yesterday being the last day of lift service at Stowe, the Skimeister and I just had to go.

I used to work and live in Stowe years and years ago, back when there actually was a guy named Perry Merrill. OK, not that long ago. Working for the mountain company was not as glamorous as it seems,...[Read more]

Scrumptious spring skiing at Jay Peak on April 16

Corn snow and creamees in one day—now that's what I call heaven.

The Skimeister and I and three friends hit the slopes of Jay Peak in the northern reaches of Vermont for a fabulous day of spring skiing yesterday. This week's weather is amazing, so we all decided to play hooky and make the most of the incredible late-season snow cover.

The high-speed quad wasn't open, so we took a handful of runs off the tram, which normally has a long liftline during the season. Not so this week.

A great Friday ski at Burke Mountain

Fun trails and glades at Burke Mountain in Vermont!

Burke Mountain in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont used to have a jingle that went something like this: "Ski Burke, Vermont's northern star, Ski Burke!" I used to hear it on the radio and I wondered what Burke was really like. Now I know. It's a mountain that essentially has one lift, but it's a lift that serves nearly 250 acres of terrain that is a heck of a lot of fun!

Hallelujah! I got my Catamount membership discounts!

I smell discounts!

I recently found a little treasure in my mailbox. The Skimeister and I received our Catamount Trail Association membership cards and the discount booklets that come with them.

The Catamount Trail is a 300-mile cross-country and backcountry ski trail that crosses the state of Vermont from head to toe. Many private land owners and ski resorts allow the trail to pass through their properties. What a terrific gift to all of us skiers.

Our membership money helps to maintain this trail. As an added...[Read more]

Where are the ticket discounts?

Look now for ski pass deals and ticket discount programs

One of the conundrums you face as a skier in northern Vermont is deciding where you purchase a season pass or discount card—or whether you do that at all. We have a bunch of ski resorts within an hour and a half from Burlington, Vt., plus an abundance of backcountry terrain that doesn't require a lift. What's a skier to do?
