Photos from Bolton Valley backcountry spring skiing

A spring skiing outing on Bolton Valley, Vermont, backcountry trails.

The Skimeister and I went to Bolton Valley Resort on Friday afternoon for an afternoon spring ski on the backcountry trails. I wasn't completely sure what to expect back there, but the snow was very soft and there was still a lot of it.

I noted that trying to make telemark turns on soft snow that hadn't been traveled recently was challenging. It's much easier when you are doing alpine skiing and you are on well-trodden moguls.

Even still, I was able to make a handful of decent telemark turns and I did a lot of straight runs and step turns. As a longtime alpine skier, I found it easier to make alpine turns in the corn snow rather than tele turns.

Our route took us up the Bryant Trail, past the cabin, up Birch Loop to the lower Birch Glades. Then we finished up on the remainder of Birch Loop and descended on Gardner's Lane. It was a gorgeous, warm day and it was great to be out in the woods, only hearing the wind and sound of our skis against the snow. Bolton Valley's backcountry skiing trails are a lovely place to enjoy snow, trees and sun.

Enjoy the photos.

Looks like a good time. I agree, teleing on soft snow can be hard, especially if there are layers and the top layer is harder then the bottom one. But as long as your in the BC, it is always a good time.
