Backcountry skiing in Vermont

Surrounded by white in Bolton, Vermont.

Wow. It felt more like February skiing today than December skiing!

The Skimeister and I earned some turns on the trails of the Bolton Valley backcountry trail network. We put skins on our skis and climbed up through the trees that were pasted with snow. We then got to enjoy powdery turns through this week’s nearly two feet of new snow!

There has been enough snow to cover many potentially wet areas of the trails. Still, we needed to keep our eyes open for water and water bars.

The other thing we kept an eye on were the branches and trees. They continued to snap here and there under the weight of the snow. In fact, a large branch fell on the Tele Practice Slope at the very end of our ski tour. We were about 80 feet from it. It made quite a racket! The Skimeister then dragged it off to the side of the slope.

We want to send out a thank you to the staff and volunteers who have been clearing the trees and branches from the trails. Their saws left tell-tale piles of sawdust. The resort will soon get to work clearing the World Cup cross-country trail, which we saw had been overrun by bent and broken branches.

As we skied among all the snowy whiteness, I thought what a great weekend it is to be out in the snow!
