Sunshine and zippy groomers today

— Smugglers' Notch, Alpine / downhill skiing

Sun, sun, sun on the Madonna I chair.

Great views over to Mt. Mansfield.

Riding the corduroy on McPherson's.

Skiers head out on Drifter.

Zippy turns on Chilcoot.

Racing on Lower Liftline.

I haven't been on the alpine boards for over a week so I took advantage of the sunshine and blue skies and I skied at Smugglers’ Notch this morning.

Despite putting on sunscreen when I left home, I think I ended up with a bit of a sunburn! It was bright out there today and the views were gorgeous.

I skied off the Madonna I chairlift to the summit and my first run was a good choice. I noticed on the snow report that they had groomed both upper and lower FIS (it’s usually a mogul run). It was pretty early in the morning so I guessed there would be some yummy corduroy. And there was! There was good snow coverage and I had the trail to myself! Yee-haw!

My plan was to stick to groomed runs for the best skiing experience (we still need more snow, Mother Nature!), and I did that with one exception. Ruthie’s was advertised as groomed but was not. I did a whole lot of “controlled skidding” on that run!

Chilcoot’s groomed surface made for zippy turns. Further down the mountain, skiing McPherson’s to Lower Chilcoot and Playground was very good. These are rather wide trails on this lower section of Madonna Peak and when they are groomed out and not crowded you can arc some big turns. Fun!

But the highlight had been FIS so I decided to finish up the day on this expert run with a nice sustained pitch. Good stuff.

The weatherman is calling for it to be sunny again tomorrow. Enjoy it if you can!

Thank goodness the snow is back!
