Volunteers have been working on a new warming hut at the base of the rope tow. They've also be clearing trails and preparing the area for the winter season. More work days are planned for this fall. Check their Facebook page for info.

Mt. Ascutney in Brownsville, Vermont, will return to life this winter with a new rope tow and backcountry skiing.
A community group called Mt. Ascutney Outdoors / Ascutney Trails has been brush cutting on some trails and they recently installed a new rope tow to service three novice trails. They will also offer backcountry skiing trails to those who want to climb uphill to earn their turns on steeper terrain.

After hearing a rumor about Mt. Ascutney ski area not operating this winter, I placed a call to its lodging reservations line. Sure enough, the reservationist said there would be no skiing available on site this winter. The nearest skiing for would be 24 miles away, she said. (The closest ski areas would be Okemo, Killington and Pico in Vermont or Whaleback in New Hampshire).

Are you ready for this? The National Weather Service reports that the higher peaks in Vermont may receive a few inches of snow, which may start falling on Friday!
Check out the mountain forecast here: http://www.erh.noaa.gov/btv/mountain/ The mountain forecast page is valid for peaks over 3,000 feet.

Believe it or not, many Vermont resorts picked up a few inches of snow early this week. I skied in it a bit late Thursday afternoon in the Bolton Valley backcountry trails.
With the warm temperatures and sunshine we have been having it was like skiing through sticky mashed potatoes. Friday night brought some snow our way in northern Vermont. As it was before Christmas, this stuff was super light and fluffy. Sugarbush resort reported seven inches of snow, Stowe says 5, Ascutney ski area reported 2 inches and Burke 1 inch. Looks like the spine of the Green Mountains won out on this little storm.
