Resorts & Mountains in Vermont > Ascutney
We're taking a look around the Green Mountain State to see who is doing what to their resorts for the coming winter. Let's get started by looking at the improvements at ski areas in southern Vermont.
Ascutney Trails community ski hill
Volunteers have been working on a new warming hut at the base of the rope tow. They've also be clearing trails and preparing the area for the winter season. More work days are planned for this fall. Check their Facebook page for info.

Mt. Ascutney in Brownsville, Vermont, will return to life this winter with a new rope tow and backcountry skiing.
A community group called Mt. Ascutney Outdoors / Ascutney Trails has been brush cutting on some trails and they recently installed a new rope tow to service three novice trails. They will also offer backcountry skiing trails to those who want to climb uphill to earn their turns on steeper terrain.
Did you learn to ski at a small ski hill? Or how about on a rope tow?...[Read more]

After hearing a rumor about Mt. Ascutney ski area not operating this winter, I placed a call to its lodging reservations line. Sure enough, the reservationist said there would be no skiing available on site this winter. The nearest skiing for would be 24 miles away, she said. (The closest ski areas would be Okemo, Killington and Pico in Vermont or Whaleback in New Hampshire).
You can tell things have not been updated on the Mt. Ascutney website for the winter of 2010/2011, but it doesn’t say...[Read more]

Are you ready for this? The National Weather Service reports that the higher peaks in Vermont may receive a few inches of snow, which may start falling on Friday!
Check out the mountain forecast here: http://www.erh.noaa.gov/btv/mountain/ The mountain forecast page is valid for peaks over 3,000 feet.
On that site you'll also see a map with what they are calling a "mountain point" forecast. It's still in test mode, but seems to work pretty well. You can click to keep track of what's happening...[Read more]

Believe it or not, many Vermont resorts picked up a few inches of snow early this week. I skied in it a bit late Thursday afternoon in the Bolton Valley backcountry trails.
With the warm temperatures and sunshine we have been having it was like skiing through sticky mashed potatoes. But there continues to be a lot of snow in the woods at this higher elevation and we had fun making the most of it. Although, we had to cross a stream to finish our descent on Gardner's Lane. There's a lot of...[Read more]

Friday night brought some snow our way in northern Vermont. As it was before Christmas, this stuff was super light and fluffy. Sugarbush resort reported seven inches of snow, Stowe says 5, Ascutney ski area reported 2 inches and Burke 1 inch. Looks like the spine of the Green Mountains won out on this little storm.
This light powder would be amazing if we had more of a base! The post-Christmas meltdown affected skiing terrain that didn't have a snowmaking base. That means that the mountains...[Read more]

Did you know Vermont has more colleges per capita than any other state? It's true. And all those students are now cramming for one of the most important assignments they will have this year: selecting a season pass from a range of college ski pass deals.
Here in northern Vermont, St. Michael's College students actually receive season passes to Smugglers' Notch as part of their tuition packages. Regularly Smuggs sells...[Read more]

What's the most common mistake out-of-state visitors make when planning ski trips to Vermont?
This is the question that Budget Travel magazine put to a Vermont guidebook author this month, and I have to say he had a decent answer.
"The biggest mistake people make is the head right to the 'biggest' mountains with the biggest names—especially Killington, Sugarbush, and Mount Snow. While those mountains have earned their reputation for some of the most exciting and difficult terrain in the...[Read more]
