Summertime means mountain biking for many skiers in Vermont. I got a new-to-me full-suspension bike this spring and I'm really enjoying it.
Last weekend we hit up Kingdom Trails in East Burke, Vermont. Other times we ride in the woods in Stowe, Waterbury, the Mad River Valley, Essex and Williston.
Biking is one way we get to enjoy Vermont's woods and mountains in the summer. Check out some of our photos from this summer. The summer started out wet (muddy), but has dried up nicely.

Vermont’s ski resorts are getting prepared for a new — and hopefully MUCH snowier — ski season. Here’s a recap of ski area improvements and investments in the central and northern portions of Vermont.

It's been a rough start to the ski season. Abnormally high temperatures have made snowmaking difficult to sustain. Vermont's larger and higher-altitude resorts made snow early on and have worked diligently to retain and expand coverage. We enjoyed some spring-like skiing at Smugglers' Notch over a week ago, for example.
Today you can make turns at eight Vermont ski resorts. (See our post about ski resort opening dates, here.) Two Nordic ski areas are also offering very limited skiing due to...[Read more]

The Skimeister and I made our first turns of the season today and boy did it feel like spring! The weather was warm and the snow was soft. We got our legs reacquainted with turning left and right on the slopes of Sterling Peak (top elevation 3,040 feet) at Smugglers’ Notch in northern Vermont.
Smuggs had basically two main ways down the mountain. We warmed up on the intermediate Upper and Lower Rumrunner, then we also threw in Lower Treasure Run to Lower Exhibition. I was working on short...[Read more]

We rustled up some friends to ski in the Northeast Kingdom this past weekend and we became reacquainted with this little gem of a mountain on Friday.

Snowmaking. That's the most prevalent improvement at Vermont ski resorts for the 2014-2015 ski season. A big reason is a program with Efficiency Vermont that provided incentives to replace old, less-efficient snowmaking equipment with new, high-efficiency equipment.
A $5-million rebate program from Efficiency Vermont helped initiate a $15-million investment in high-efficiency snow guns at resorts around the state. The resorts say that the new snowmaking guns can create a lot more snow in less...[Read more]

Northern and central Vermont won out on this storm. Up to two feet of snow is being reported in the mountains! And it was still snowing this morning.
Unfortunately southern Vermont didn't fare as well due to warmer than expected temperatures. Resorts down in the southern-most part of the state got less than a foot of snow because sleet and rain were mixed in.
