As soon as a few maple leaves start to turn color, a Vermont skier’s thoughts turn toward winter. Yes, fall is lovely but it’s really all about for preparing for winter and ski season, isn’t it?!?
With that in mind, we're sharing our 2016 Vermont ski swap list here on SkiMaven.com. We update this list as details about Vermont ski swaps become available.

Springtime often brings soft snow, fickle weather and traditions such as pond skimming, but it also means that ski areas begin to wrap up operations.
Here's a look at which Vermont ski areas are still open for spring skiing. Before you go, check our Vermont Ski Resorts page for direct links to the resorts' snow conditions reports.

With rain and warm weather moving in, the cross-country ski centers in northern Vermont are not likely to last much longer. So today we went out and got what we could get at Trapp Family Lodge Cross-Country Center before it was gone.
It's been a rough season for Nordic pursuits. The Nordic centers that had snowmaking capabilities put it to good use. The higher elevation centers fared better than others.
Trapps has made a bunch of snow recently and they put it in piles on a loop of trails that...[Read more]

The higher elevations of Vermont have earned some snow this week! The mountain peaks got the most, and alpine skiers have been reveling in fresh powder. But the snow has been a shot in the arm for Vermont's Nordic skiing centers, as well.
Today I joined a friend in a midday ski at the cross-country ski center at Stowe Mountain Resort. The snow is not deep there (you could tell while you were poling), but there was enough to make for nice groomed ski conditions with very light skier...[Read more]

Lovely light on Friday afternoon! We ended the week by earning some turns on the backcountry ski trails at Bolton Valley, Vermont.
It was a bit chilly, especially when the breeze came through, but the sun felt great when it found us. The snow is not real deep up there but it is light and fluffy (except where snowshoers had made craters along the trail). You do need to still watch for water bars and other obstacles.
The cross-country ski trails look like they are better shape with the recent...[Read more]

We were looking for some exercise today away from the weekend crowds on the slopes. We decided to ski around the Nordic trails at Bolton Valley. The sun was shining and we had on our light, waxless backcountry gear. We messed around in the snow for a while.
Due to the temperature drop after yesterday's wet snowfall, trails that had been skied on yesterday were now hard-packed and iced over, and untracked areas were crusty. (Bolton Nordic says there isn't enough snow for them to groom yet.) I...[Read more]

January has become a great month to introduce a friend or family member to the joys of skiing or snowboarding. And, if Nordic skiing is not yet part of your repertoire, it's a great time for you to try something new, as well!

It's been a rough start to the ski season. Abnormally high temperatures have made snowmaking difficult to sustain. Vermont's larger and higher-altitude resorts made snow early on and have worked diligently to retain and expand coverage. We enjoyed some spring-like skiing at Smugglers' Notch over a week ago, for example.
Today you can make turns at eight Vermont ski resorts. (See our post about ski resort opening dates, here.) Two Nordic ski areas are also offering very limited skiing due to...[Read more]

Spring sunshine and temperatures were forecast today so we made plans to enjoy the day outside. We put a couple pairs of Nordic skis in the car and headed to Ole's Cross-Country Ski Center in Warren, Vermont. We hadn't been to Ole's this winter for some reason, so we wanted to get there before the season ends.
We started for the Deer Run Trail, first crossing the wide-open expanse that serves as a runway in the summertime. (Ole's is located at the seasonal Sugarbush-Warren Airport.) The...[Read more]

The Skimeister and I skied through a small snowstorm today in northern Vermont. At midday at Sleepy Hollow Nordic Ski Center in Huntington, Vermont, it was really coming down. The snow had covered up the morning's grooming and was filling in the classic tracks.
I prepared myself for skiing in the falling snow by putting a bandana around my neck and wearing light-tinted sunglasses. (It's not pleasant to let your eyes be pelted by the snow when you are going downhill!)
We skied two loops at...[Read more]

What do you do when you have a business meeting planned in Stowe? You make time for a ski, of course!
We each brought two pairs of skis because we weren't sure exactly what the snow conditions would be like. Early this week we had warmer weather, which was quickly followed by winter temperatures. We were thinking things would be quite firm.
The snow was firm, but because of the Trapp Family Lodge's great grooming it was very skiable. The Skimeister had prepared our classic skis well with...[Read more]

The Skimeister and I joined up with six other skiing buddies to explore the cross-country trails at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center last weekend. Located in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom — about 1.5 hours northeast of Burlington, Vermont; 1 hour north of Montpelier; and 1 hour northwest of St. Johnsbury — this place is a Nordic skier's dream.
The grooming is impeccable and the classic tracks are bomber. The center uses large Pisten Bully grooming machines to churn up the snow, smooth it...[Read more]

I love downhill skiing but on the coldest day it's just downright challenging to keep your extremities from freezing as you dangle on a chairlift and create extra windchill during your descent. What's an avid skier to do?

The Skimeister and I got out at lunchtime for some exercise in the brilliant sunshine. We played around in the powdery snow that is in the fields at Catamount Outdoor Center in Williston, Vt. Our skis plowed through about four inches of powder as we made loops under blue skies.

Yay! It felt so good to get out on snowy trails today after a long week of work and frigid temperatures. And, when I took to the cross-country trails, I suddenly was skiing through a mini-snowstorm! What a treat to have it look like winter over Thanksgiving weekend! We snuck in a short cross-country tour in fresh snow before eating turkey on Thursday, and this morning we skied up the CCC Road at Underhill State Park. This is located on the western side of Mt. There's been quite a bit of natural snow falling in the higher elevations of northern Vermont (13 inches now at the stake atop Mt. Mansfield), so we headed for the Stowe - Smugglers’ Notch area. We thought the skiing should be good on Route 108 going through Smugglers’Notch, and we were right!

What a gorgeous Friday to explore the twists and turns of the Camel's Hump Nordic trails! This volunteer-run Nordic trail network has a lovely setting in the quiet woods of Huntington, Vermont. As its name suggests, the trails are near Camel's Hump, Vermont’s third highest peak. However we did not see the Hump where we were skiing; a ridgeline was in the way.

Such a great day to hit the Nordic ski trails at Sleepy Hollow in Huntington, Vermont. This cross-country center has a mellow feel to it and we didn't pass many people on the trails. You know what they say about heavy, damp snow: It's good for the base!
Higher elevations in northern Vermont received a handful of inches of new snow overnight on Saturday. On Sunday, I did a ski tour through the damp snow — the kind that is good for snowballs — in warm temperatures. I was sure to have a ski scraper in my pocket in case the snow clumped onto my waxless skis.

Did you get out on the snow this weekend? There was fresh snow at most Vermont ski resorts, and people were loving it!
We had time to ski on Sunday, and with the cold temperatures and strong wind we headed out for a heat-inducing cross-country ski.

I guess I needed to reapply sunscreen today, as now that I'm back from a long ski and some après ski, I see a red nose in the mirror!
It was a beauty of a day to be outside. We looked at our options for cross-country skiing — which aren't stellar right now, unfortunately — and decided to take our sturdy, waxless touring skis to the Stowe Mountain Resort Cross-Country Center.

The Skimeister and I got on the snow today with a Nordic ski in Stowe. Work's been busy and after rain early in the week, with subsequent freezing, we weren't real keen on going downhill skiing.

What a day to be out on the Nordic trails! The sun came out, the temperatures warmed up to “normal” wintertime numbers, and in the early afternoon there was not very much wind!
The SkiMeister and I took our skinniest classic skis to Ole's Nordic center in Warren, Vermont. I got a good workout today in a lovely setting. I enjoyed a cross-country ski at the Stowe Mountain Resort / Mt. Mansfield Nordic center in Stowe, Vt.
With warm temperatures on tap, I dressed in layers and found myself skiing in a light fleece on for the uphill portion of my ski.
