Resorts & Mountains in Vermont > Ole's
When I cross-country skied almost two weeks ago, I nearly froze my fingers off in the bitter wind. Today I could have worn a t-shirt and gone without gloves.
Spring temperatures have come early to northern Vermont and many cross-country ski centers will soon feel their effects if they haven't already. For this reason, we took advantage of fair weather to hit the Nordic trails this afternoon.
We skied two loops at Ole's Cross-Country Center in Warren, Vermont. The snow was very soft, and there...[Read more]

Spring sunshine and temperatures were forecast today so we made plans to enjoy the day outside. We put a couple pairs of Nordic skis in the car and headed to Ole's Cross-Country Ski Center in Warren, Vermont. We hadn't been to Ole's this winter for some reason, so we wanted to get there before the season ends.
We started for the Deer Run Trail, first crossing the wide-open expanse that serves as a runway in the summertime. (Ole's is located at the seasonal Sugarbush-Warren Airport.) The...[Read more]

What a day to be out on the Nordic trails! The sun came out, the temperatures warmed up to “normal” wintertime numbers, and in the early afternoon there was not very much wind!
The SkiMeister and I took our skinniest classic skis to Ole's Nordic center in Warren, Vermont. Ole's trails don't have a huge base, in fact they need more snow to open their wooded trails, but what was open had good grooming and tracks. We kicked and glided and enjoyed the sunny scenery....[Read more]

With temperatures expected to rise to 10 degrees or more today, and a bright, sunny start to the day, it was clear that I had to get out and hit the trail!
On colder days I really prefer to stay warm while I ski. This typically means backcountry or cross-country skiing. I checked the snow report at Ole's Cross-Country Center in Warren, Vt., and headed out in the late morning.
When I stopped in to get my trail pass, a helpful staff member gave me the low-down on conditions. One section of...[Read more]

The snow continues to be great thanks to Mother Nature serving up frequent “refresher” snows overnight. Today was a cold one (a good day to get work done), but the temperatures will warm up for tomorrow and the weekend so you can be sure we'll be playing in the snow!
Here are a couple of events that can help you try out a new sport, or get a friend introduced to your favorite snowsport.
Winter Trails Day
On January 12, some Vermont Nordic centers are offering special lessons or...[Read more]

Today was a day for passing snow showers in the Mad River Valley of Vermont. We enjoyed a nice cross-country ski tour at Ole’s nordic center in Warren, Vt.
The temperature was in the 30s with little wind, so it was a day when you could unzip your jacket much of the time. The snow on the sides of the trail had crusted over in the last couple of days, but the groomed trails were good for skate skis and waxless classic skis. In most places, the classic tracks were too...[Read more]

We did some cross-country skiing on a sunny Sunday at Ole's Nordic Center in Warren, Vermont. The snow coverage was excellent. In fact, the snow was very fast because it hadn't heated up much, even in the sun.
You might notice that in one of the photos above, the flags are standing straight out. The winds were strong on Sunday! Couple that with some not-so-spring-like temperatures, and I was happy to keep moving and keep generating heat!
Yup, still winter in Vermont, so we're...[Read more]

On Sunday the Skimeister and I heard that Monday would bring a “wintry mix” to northern Vermont, so we grabbed our gear and headed for Ole's Cross-Country Ski Center in Warren, Vermont.
It’s a scenic trail network and the trails had a thin blanket of fresh snow from the night before. We would ski a loop on Trails 5, 7a, 4, 7 and back to 5 for the return to the nordic center. Our ski tour brought us through meadows, passing brooks, birch trees, evergreens and crossing hay fields. It was quite...[Read more]

Catamount Trail
Light snow fell most of the weekend in Vermont's Mad River Valley and on the other side of the Green Mountains, where I was skiing section 17 of the Catamount Trail. As our group skied the 10-mile section of this backcountry trail on Saturday, the fluffy snow created a featherbed effect along the trail.
This section starts on the Natural Turnpike in Ripton, Vermont, and snakes its way to Lincoln Gap in Lincoln. We skied north, following the western edge of the Green Mountains....[Read more]

Over the last week and a half I've tried to make the most of the sunny days to hit the slopes or cross-country ski trails. I'm thankful that I can work odd hours, so that often gives me flexibility to do so.
Today was forecast to be warm and sunny so we did some spring nordic skiing at Ole's Cross-Country Center in Warren, Vermont. They still have quite a bit of snow there. Some sunny spots are starting to melt out a bit, but overall the skiing was very good at midday today.
When you nordic...[Read more]

Can it get any better than this?
The Skimeister and I hit Ole's cross-country center in Warren, Vermont, this afternoon for a ski tour. It was absolutely gorgeous out. No clouds. Warm temperatures. And the snow was still firm in many places because of our cold evenings and excellent grooming at Ole's.
I was on skating skis while the Skimeister took to the trails in a sit-ski. He rented it recently so he could get out skiing despite a major knee injury that he sustained last month. Yup, he...[Read more]

When you arrive at Ole's nordic center in Warren, Vermont, you can't help but notice the ski lodge looks a bit like an air traffic tower. And the orange windsocks make you really start to suspect something.
Ole's is in fact a small airport during the summer months. But to those who don't know any better, this cross-country center just seems to have a big, wide, snowy field right out its back door.
When I arrived on Wednesday afternoon, local children were wrapping up their school skiing...[Read more]
