The Women's World Cup is coming to Vermont this weekend. The best slalom and giant slalom skiers in the world will hit the Superstar trail at Killington, Vermont.
Friday night kicks things off with a free concert, athletes getting their race bibs on stage, and fireworks. Last year it was estimated that 16,000 people gathered to watch the action on Saturday and 14,000 on Sunday.
On Saturday, November 25, the first run of the GS is at 10 a.m. The second at 1 p.m.

With the help of colder temperatures and natural snow moving into our area today, several Vermont ski resorts are poised to open during Thanksgiving week and weekend. We had a warm spell for a while but snowmakers have been getting back to work and Mother Nature has helped out with the real stuff.
See our post about 2016 Vermont ski resort opening dates, which we update. Those tentatively planning to open in the coming week include Bromley, Burke, Jay Peak, Mount Snow, Okemo, Smugglers'...[Read more]

Congratulations to the ski racers at the 2013 NCAA Skiing Championships! The races were contested on the slopes of Middlebury Snow Bowl and trails of Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton, Vt.
While things were looking very good for UVM to take another title this year, they finished on the podium in third place. U Colorado and U Utah beat them out on the last day. Sigh.

Ooh la la! We had the good fortune to take in the World Cup Nordic sprint races in Québec City this weekend and what a weekend it was!
First of all, I'd estimate that one-third of the crowd was from the US — many representing Vermont. This was the first World Cup event to be held in eastern North America in 27 years, and lucky for us it was withing driving distance of the Green Mountain State. With a handful of racers hailing from Vermont, you bet they had friends and family lining the...[Read more]

Craftsbury Outdoor Center in northern Vermont has been hosting many of the country's best nordic skiers all week — first with the USSA Super Tour Finals and then with the 30k & 50k National Championships.
The Skimeister and I hit the road early to catch today's men's race. The gun went off at 9 a.m. with 90 racers starting because juniors were also racing in the group, although for a shorter 20k distance.

First, the really exciting news: The University of Vermont ski team has won the NCAA championship! This is their first championship title since 1994. Yes, this has been a long time coming!
We've really enjoyed following the team over the years and watching some of the racing in Stowe. Both the nordic and alpine skiers excelled at NCAAs, but the women probably clinched the deal for UVM. Women skiers from UVM were often in the top five of their alpine or...[Read more]

Blue skies. White snow. Ski racing action. It was another gorgeous day to be out on skis!
Today's cross-country ski races at the UVM Winter Carnival at Trapp Family Lodge featured freestyle (or skating) races. Both men and women skied 10 km. This time, UVM's Caitlin Patterson came out on top. On the men's side, Middlebury's Patrick Johnson won for a second day in a row.

We caught some of the racing action today at the 2012 UVM Winter Carnival. We watched the men compete in the classic cross-country race at Trapp Family Lodge. It was a 10 km race on a lovely, sunny day. Then we tried to emulate what we saw by doing some classic skiing ourselves on the snowy trails. Stowe had received about 1 to 2 inches of snow overnight.
