— Fall & early season, Backcountry skiing, Bolton Valley

The sun came out on Saturday and made my snowy turns even better!

Midday on Saturday offered up snowflakes, deep snow and sunshine!

I skinned up trails at Bolton Valley. The ski area won't open until early December, but they are already making snow on the main mountain. As I began climbing, it was rather warm and it was snowing. The deep snow was starting to get a bit heavy. On the way up I made note of the many open water bars that I should avoid on the way down.

It was wonderful to be out on the snow getting exercise after a week of work. And to my surprise, after I took the skins off my skis, the sun came out. There was a big blue hole in the clouds above and it happened to be right over Bolton Valley. This made the ski down extra sweet!

Bolton said they received a foot of new snow over the last two days. I could tell it was more than what we skied in on Thursday evening.

I made slow turns in deep snow. I'm working on my telemark turns (they aren't pretty) and this was a great way to do it. I headed for untracked areas and practiced my turns through the powder. I stopped a number of times to catch my breath and to enjoy the view and the sun on my face.

I had to pinch myself. It's mid-November — and I'm skiing in powder!

Enjoying some fluffy new snow in northern Vermont
