Cross-country skiing in Stowe, Vermont.
Cross-country skiing at Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont.

Today I skied with a group at the Trapp Family Lodge Nordic center. The snow was amazing! Apparently when we got rain in the Champlain Valley this week, the higher elevations in northern Vermont got snow that didn't change over to rain.

The snow coverage was terrific. And on the sides of the trails there was a deep layer of powder before your pole hit the hard crust below. (We got that crust layer nearly two weeks ago.)

Trapps does a very nice job of grooming and we enjoyed skiing in sturdy classic tracks and on packed powder. Our outing took us up to the cabin via Fox Track, Yerrick's Yodel and the Cabin Trail. It was a very busy day at the cabin and all around the Nordic center. We had a rather brief break at the cabin to snack and drink water. Then it was time to move on!

We circled around Round Top peak via the Haul Road and Hare Line. We descended Bobcat and the took a long climb up Oslo Trail. (It's much more fun to go down it!) The downhill Parizo trail was in amazing shape. The best snow I've ever experienced on it. For kicks we skied down Old County Road to Russell Knoll to return to the Nordic center.

On the drive home we treated ourselves to an Aztec hot chocolate at Lake Champlain Chocolates in Waterbury. (It has a little spice and heat to it.) I rarely stop here —there's also a Cabot Cheese store — but it was the right thing to do today!

I think I will sleep well tonight :)
