Backcountry skiing on a warm and sunny February day

— Backcountry skiing, Bolton Valley
Snowy glades and blue sky

Skiing in Colorado? Nah, just a gorgeous day in northern Vermont.

Backcountry ski trail with snow-covered trees

I was in my happy place today. We did a ski tour that had us climb up to 3,000 feet and then ski down through the sunny, snowy woods.

It was so nice to be able to leisurely switch over to downhill mode. The weather was windless and warm. There was no reason to rush as we took the skins off our skis and put on our helmets and dry mittens.

There's still a lot of snow in the backcountry trail network at Bolton Valley, Vermont. Every once in a while I would stab a pole into the snow and have half of it disappear in the deep snow. The snow is a stiffer powder consistency than before so when you ski you typically don't dig in too deep.

We had some fun turns in the sunny Birch Glades and then down along Gardiner's Lane to the woods near the Tele Practice Slope.

Such a great day to be earning some turns!

Now we'll see what happens with this wintry mix we're expecting tonight and tomorrow. Followed by a deep freeze next week. Never a dull moment!

Enjoying some fluffy new snow in northern Vermont

So grateful for new snow! At higher elevations in northern Vermont, we've seen quite a bit of fluffy new snow in the last couple of days. Above 1600 feet or so there's often a decent, frozen base, as…
