Final day of NCAA Championships brings good news and less-than-good news

— Stowe, Alpine / downhill skiing

It's been exciting to have the nation’s best collegiate skiers around this week in Stowe!

First the good news: Congratulations to UVM's Tim Kelley on his top performance in Saturday's NCAA championship slalom race. This Starksboro, Vermont, native is the 2011 slalom champ!UVM's Tim Kelley

Other area skiers in the top 10 included Trevor Leafe of Dartmouth in 4th place and Andrew McNealus of Middlebury College in 6th place. McNealus hails from Woodstock, Vermont. Leafe is from New Hampshire and he attended Burke Mountain Academy.

In the women's slalom, UVM freshman Kate Ryley from Toronto landed a fourth place finish behind two Denver University skiers and a St. Lawrence skier. UVM's Lyndee Janowiak of Michigan was the only other top-10 skier from an eastern college, finishing in 8th place. Sterling Grant of DU was the 2011 slalom champ. In second place was Lindsay Cone of DU, a resident of Killington, Vermont.

Now, the not-so-good news: These UVM racers weren't enough to pull UVM to the top of the standings once the racing was complete and all the points tallied. The UVM team finished sixth overall. The 2011 championship went to the University of Colorado Buffaloes. Dartmouth College placed third and Middlebury College ninth.

Here's a rundown of the final team standings. For more info on nordic and alpine race results and UVM performances, visit <link http: uvmathletics.com>this UVM site.

I have a good feeling about next year...
