Skiing in a new snow in Vermont

Cross-country skiing in new snow at Catamount Outdoor Center today.

Today my day started with a lot of snow, and ended with a lot of snow. I started by shoveling my driveway — OK, not so fun — but it ended with a lovely, snowy ski at the Catamount Outdoor Center in Williston, Vt. This Chittenden County Nordic center opened for the season today thanks to abundant snowfall this week!

Much of Vermont got dumped on over the last couple of days (see the <link http: forecast.weather.gov external-link-new-window external link in new>NWS for snowfall totals — hello, double digits!). There are now 30 inches of snow at the stake atop Mt. Mansfield.

The first day of snow was wet and heavy, and the second day brought lighter snow in many places. It's great news for ski resorts that rely on natural snow to open new terrain. Several more ski areas open on Friday and Saturday (<link http: www.skimaven.com post vermont-ski-resort-opening-dates-2014-2015 _top external-link-new-window>check our list). And of course it's great news for Nordic skiers whether they are hitting the backcountry or the groomed Nordic centers.

Enjoy the photos from our late-afternoon cross-country ski and get out there and enjoy the snow!
