Vermont ski resort count for this weekend: 13

More Vermont ski resorts open

UPDATE: Make that 14 resorts. Mad River Glen announced it will fire up a lift this weekend, as well. ---------- We're having a great December so far in Vermont, thanks to Mother Nature. This weekend Bolton Valley, Middlebury Snow Bowl and Pico Mountain will open — joining 10 other ski resorts in Vermont that are already running their lifts. (See our updated blog post here for exact opening dates.) Mad River Glen, which relies heavily on natural snow, is still in wait-and-see mode. They...[Read more]

Dear Santa: All we want for Christmas is some cold weather and more snow!

It's been a rough start to the ski season. Abnormally high temperatures have made snowmaking difficult to sustain. Vermont's larger and higher-altitude resorts made snow early on and have worked diligently to retain and expand coverage. We enjoyed some spring-like skiing at Smugglers' Notch over a week ago, for example. Today you can make turns at eight Vermont ski resorts. (See our post about ski resort opening dates, here.) Two Nordic ski areas are also offering very limited skiing due to...[Read more]

Super groomed trails and sunny backcountry trails at Rikert Nordic Center today

Today the Skimeister and I glided around the trails at Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton, Vermont. The sun was bright and the temperatures were warming through the day. We just had to get outside! Rikert is owned by Middlebury College and it is situated on the Bread Loaf campus. If you were driving Route 125 you would recognize the Bread Loaf campus by its mustard-yellow buildings. They are rather stunning when surrounded by white snow and blue sky. We put on our classic...[Read more]

Thanksgiving week starts with good snowmaking temps — wintry mix to follow

Snowmaking at Sleepy Hollow cross-country center

Snowmakers are earning their keep these recent cold days and nights. Resorts are pumping out a lot of snow in anticipation of Thanksgiving weekend, as well as some December opening days. (Who's open? Check here.) It sounds like Mother Nature will get into the act on Tuesday night and Wednesday, with a wintry mix that should include rain, sleet and snow accumulation. We'll see how it pans out. Check the Burlington National Weather Service report. Even a few Nordic ski...[Read more]

Warm weekend includes a walk up less snowy Smugglers' Notch road

We’re so glad that we took advantage of the fresh snow and cold temperatures earlier this week to go cross-country skiing on the road through Smugglers’ Notch. We went up there again today — this time from the Jeffersonville side of the notch — and a lot of snow had melted. We walked up this time and started on dry pavement, then hit slushy ice, then only at the top of the notch did we find areas of deeper snow in shady spots. Oh well, it is November! It was a cool walk just the...[Read more]

2013 NCAA Skiing Championships Women's Cross Country -- Middlebury, Vermont

Congratulations to the ski racers at the 2013 NCAA Skiing Championships! The races were contested on the slopes of Middlebury Snow Bowl and trails of Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton, Vt. While things were looking very good for UVM to take another title this year, they finished on the podium in third place. U Colorado and U Utah beat them out on the last day. Sigh. The SkiMeister and I watched the last day of racing on Saturday. We saw the men's Nordic 20K freestyle and the...[Read more]

Spring-like cross-country skiing at Rikert Nordic Center today

Spring was in the air and in the snow today as we visited Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton, Vermont. It was Winter Trails Day and Rikert (pronounced rye-curt) was offering free skiing, rentals and a group lesson. Can't beat that deal! The Skimeister was helping with the Northeast Disabled Athletic Association's free sit-ski clinic. I took a tour that would bring me in a clockwise triangle of sorts through the Nordic network, which is based at Middlebury's Bread Loaf...[Read more]

Deal alert: January learn-to-ski-and-snowboard deals & free XC skiing

The snow continues to be great thanks to Mother Nature serving up frequent “refresher” snows overnight. Today was a cold one (a good day to get work done), but the temperatures will warm up for tomorrow and the weekend so you can be sure we'll be playing in the snow! Here are a couple of events that can help you try out a new sport, or get a friend introduced to your favorite snowsport. Winter Trails Day On January 12, some Vermont Nordic centers are offering special lessons or...[Read more]

Thank goodness for good grooming at ski centers such as Rikert!

We had a sunny stretch this week before some ugly spring-like weather was to hit this weekend (a bit of rain on Saturday and then snow coming Sunday night). I just had to get out into the sunshine. But with a bit of rain that fell recently, a crust had developed in many places so I wanted to find a scenic cross-country ski center with very good grooming. Rikert Ski Touring Center in Ripton, Vt., filled the bill. Located at Middlebury College's Bread Loaf campus, Rikert has a lovely network...[Read more]

Great grooming & some surprises at Rikert cross-country center

The kids that go to Middlebury College have it good. They can ski at the Middlebury Snow Bowl and the Rikert Ski touring Center; both are owned and operated by the college. To get to Rikert from Middlebury, we drove Route 125 up and along the Middlebury River, through the micro-village of Ripton, and then to the college's scenic Bread Loaf Campus. Rikert nordic center is based in one of the barns on this historic summer campus known for its writers' conference. The mustard-colored historic...[Read more]
